Eagles Bounce Back with 18-10 Win against Denison

Emory University sophomore Kevin O'Connor drove in five runs, including a bases-loaded triple, and junior Mark Mazur added three RBIs, leading the Eagles to a 18-10 win over Denison University.

After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles notched four in the bottom of the second, including RBI hits for Matt Fennell, Gabe Shivers and O'Connor to take a 4-0 lead.  Emory would add on three more in the bottom of the third, including two on an RBI double from Andrew Cohn, to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Denison would get back into the game with three runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to four runs, but O'Connor's bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the fifth would bring Emory's lead to 11-3.  The Eagles would go on to score four more in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to cement the victory.

Junior Paul Schwendel made his first start of the season, allowing just one earned run on two hits and striking out seven batters.  Schwendel lowered his ERA to 2.08 during the contest, the lowest among all qualifying Eagle pitchers this season.

O'Connor finished the day two-for-four with a double and a triple and five RBIs, and is now batting .350 with a team-best 14 RBIs this season.  Cohn added a three-for-five performance with three runs scored and two RBIs to raise his team-leading batting average to .382, while Mazur was two-for-two with a triple, three runs, three RBIs and two walks.  Junior Patrick Riebsame went three-for-five with a double and two RBIs.

The Eagles finished the game with eight extra base hits in the contest, while playing 24 players in the contest.

Despite the positives for the Eagles, the game was an ugly one at times, with the two teams combining to walk 19 batters and hit an additional nine, while committing six errors.

Emory improved to 6-6 on the season with the win, while Denison dropped to 0-1 with its season-opening loss.  The Eagles will wrap up their first part of the season on Sunday, facing Case Western Reserve University at noon in the team's final contest before the University Athletic Association (UAA) Tournament.
