Emory Baseball Defeats Huntingdon 12-5 to Split Weekend Series

The Emory University baseball team salvaged a split in its weekend series at Huntingdon College, as the Eagles defeated the Hawks 12-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with a run in the first inning from an Andrew Cohn RBI single, and two more in the third inning on a balk and a Dan Molnar sacrifice fly.  After Huntingdon got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third, the Eagles put up three more runs in the top of the fourth with back-to-back RBI doubles for Gabe Shivers and Kevin O’Connor, followed by a run-scoring single for Jonathan Reilly, giving the Eagles a 6-1 lead.

The six runs would be all starter Matthew Katten would need, as the senior earned the win to improve to 6-2 on the season, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings, while striking out three batters. 

Emory’s offense would add on another run in the fifth inning, and seal the victory with five runs in the top of the ninth, including three on a single from freshman Jake Eisenberg.  Seniors Zeb Heidt and Brian Cournoyer combined to pitch the last three innings, allowing a run on three hits.

Six different Eagles picked up two hits in the game, as Emory totaled 15 hits as a team during the contest.  Molnar and Eisenberg each drove in two runs, while O’Connor scored three runs of his own.  Cohn finished the day two-for-three with a run, a RBI, two stolen bases, and two walks.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 17-19 on the season, and kept alive hope to finish the season above .500 with three games remaining.  Huntingdon dropped to 27-12 with the loss.

Emory will begin its final week of the 2010 season on Wednesday, as the Eagles will host Atlanta Christian College at Chappell Park at 3:00 PM.
