Emory Baseball Loses to Maryville College, 8-6

The Emory University baseball team was unable to hold on to a pair of three-run leads against Maryville College, as the Eagles fell to the Scots 8-6 in Maryville, TN on Tuesday afternoon.

Emory took an early 1-0 lead, picking up three-consecutive hits to start the game, including an RBI single up the middle for shortstop Jonathan Reilly, scoring first baseman Ryan Jones.  However, an error, two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first for Maryville would tie the game at a run apiece.

The Eagles would take the lead again in the third, as second baseman Kevin O’Connor picked up his third triple of the year, driving in Jones to put Emory on top 2-1.  A Reilly RBI single and an Andrew Cohn sacrifice fly later in the inning would extend Emory’s lead to 4-1.

After the Scots answered back with a run in the bottom of the third, Reilly picked up his third RBI single in as many at bats in the fourth, extending Emory’s lead to 5-2.

However, the tide would begin to turn against the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth inning, as starter Matthew Katten would allow four runs on three hits, including two home runs, to give the Scots a 6-5 lead.  Emory would get another run back in the sixth, as Reilly earned his fourth RBI of the game on a bases-loaded groundout, and Katten would leave the game tied 6-6 after six innings.

In the seventh, Maryville scored a pair of runs off reliever Adam Genn, taking an 8-6 lead.  Emory would not score again, giving Genn the loss and dropping his season record to 2-2.

The Eagles have now lost four-consecutive games, dropping to 13-15 on the season.  Maryville, which defeated Emory for the second time this season, improved to 17-9.

Emory will return to action tomorrow, hosting Oglethorpe University at Chappell Park at 3:00 PM.
