Emory Baseball to Honor Clyde Doc Partin During Opening Weekend against Oglethorpe
The Emory University baseball team will embark upon its 2010
campaign this weekend, as the Eagles will face cross-town rival
Oglethorpe University in a three-game series.
The Eagles will open their season on Friday, February
12th at Oglethorpe at 4:00 PM, before opening Chappell
Park at 1:00 PM on Saturday against Oglethorpe. The Eagles
and the Stormy Petrels will face off again on Sunday at 1:00 PM to
wrap up the season series.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Emory will honor former
athletic director Clyde ‘Doc' Partin, who passed away last
June. Doc, who served as an assistant coach for the baseball
team since its inception in 1991, served the University for over 50
years, and remains the most influential figure in the history of
Emory's athletics program. A ceremony and special first pitch
will be held prior to the start of the game to recognize and
remember Doc's contributions to the program.
Emory finished the 2009 season with a record of 24-18, the team's
18th-consecutive winning season. The Eagles will
be returning 19 players from last year's squad, in addition to 14
newcomers.
Oglethorpe will begin the weekend with a 1-1 record on the season,
after splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Maryville College.
Last season, the Stormy Petrels finished the season with a 19-17
record.
Last year, the Eagles won the three-game season series against the
Stormy Petrels 2-1, including a 1-1 record at Oglethorpe and a 1-0
mark at home. Emory pitcher Elliott Coor was
1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings against the Stormy Petrels last
year, while sophomore Kevin O'Connor hit .300 with
three RBIs, five runs scored and three walks during the three
contests. Emory holds a 36-12 advantage in the all-time
series with Oglethorpe.
Emory Notes:
Emory University senior outfielder Dan
Molnar will begin the season with 109 career walks, seven
shy of the school record, currently held by Allen Rigell
(1998-01)... Emory head coach Mike Twardoski will
begin the season with a career record of 318-128-1 record, good for
a .711 winning percentage... The Eagles will be returning three
all-UAA players from last season - Molnar, junior infielder
Andrew Cohn, and senior closer Zeb
Heidt.
