Hinojosa & Hannon Named the UAA Baseball Athletes of the Week
Emory University freshmen Ben Hinojosa and
Brandon Hannon earned the University Athletic
Association’s (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors for baseball,
following their performances during the Rawlings Southern Classic
last weekend.
Hinojosa pitched seven shutout innings during his first-career
start, guiding the Eagles to a 5-0 win over Denison
University. Making just his second collegiate appearance,
Hinojosa scattered six hits, while striking out six and not walking
or hitting a batter. The right-handed pitcher needed just 89
pitches to get through his seven innings of work, and faced just
four batters over the minimum. Hinojosa, now 1-0 on the year,
lowered his ERA to 1.29 during the game.
Hannon led all Eagles with a .600 batting average, two doubles, a
.800 slugging percentage, and a .692 on base percentage during four
victories last weekend. Hannon made his first collegiate
start against York College (Pa.) on Friday, going three-for-four
with a run scored, a RBI, a double and a walk, and drove in the
go-ahead run in the fourth inning. The freshman started a
pair of games in right field on Sunday, going two-for-four with a
double, two RBIs and a stolen base against York, and one-for-one
with two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base against Denison
University. Hannon is batting .545 with four runs and three
RBIs this season.
The pair helped Emory to a 4-0 weekend at the Rawlings Southern
Classic, as Emory improved to 5-1 overall. The Eagles will be
back in action on Tuesday, hosting Washington and Lee University at
Chappell Park at 2:00 PM.
