Monaco & Cohn Named the UAA Baseball Players of the Week
Emory University seniors Chris Monaco and
Andrew Cohn were named the University Athletic
Association’s (UAA) pitcher and hitter of the week,
respectively, for their performance during the Eagles’ first
two games of the season.
Monaco earned an opening-day victory for the Eagles, allowing two
runs on four hits over five innings pitched during the team’s
14-4 victory. Playing at home against Oglethorpe University,
Monaco started the game for Emory, retiring the leadoff batter in
each of his five innings of work, and sitting the Stormy Petrels
down in order in both the first and fourth innings. The
right-handed pitcher added four strikeouts while walking just three
batters during the game. Monaco’s performance was good
for a 3.60 earned run average, while opponents hit just .211
against him in the game.
Cohn, the Eagles’ third baseman hit .500 with a team-best six
runs batted in during a split of a home-and-home series during the
first two games of the year. In the season-opening game, Cohn
went three-for-four with four RBIs, one run scored and a
double. In addition, he made two diving catches at third base
during the game, including a run-saving play in the third
inning. The following day, during a 7-5 Emory loss against
Oglethorpe, he hit a go-ahead two run single in the sixth inning,
stole second base, and scored a run to give Emory a 5-3 lead at the
time.
Emory, now 1-1 on the season, will be back in action on Friday at
2:00 PM, as the Eagles will face York College (Pa.) in the first
game of the Rawlings Southern Classic.
