Emory Baseball Edges Denison 3-2 at Rawlings Southern Classic

Emory University’s Paul Schwendel allowed two runs on eight hits over seven and a third innings pitched, lifting the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Denison University on the second day of the Rawlings Southern Classic.

Schwendel held the Big Red scoreless over the first seven innings of work, before allowing a pair of runs in the eighth inning.  The senior struck out five batters while walking just one during the game, en route to his first victory of the season.  Schwendel lowered his season ERA to 4.22 with the performance.

The Eagles scored all three of their runs during the fourth inning.  Emory started off the frame by reaching on back-to-back errors by the Denison infield to put runners on first and second with nobody out.  With one out in the inning, freshman Jared Welch drove in the first run of the inning with a double to left centerfield, scoring Andrew Cohn.  After Patrick Riebsame scored on a wild pitch, junior Jay Page drove in the third run of the frame with a double.

Denison would score two runs in the eighth inning to pull back within one run.  However, sophomore Mike Bitanga closed out the contest, retiring the last five batters he faced in the game to earn his first save as an Eagle.

Welch finished the game with two of the three Emory hits in the contest.  

Emory raised its record to 3-1 on the season with the win, while Denison dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Emory will be back in action tomorrow, hosting York (Pa.) College at 10:30 AM and Denison University at 2:00 PM, in the final games of the Rawlings Southern Classic at Chappell Park.
