Emory's Ryan Dagerman Qualifies For Southern Amateur
Emory University's Ryan Dagerman (Dallas, TX)
has qualified for the 2010 Southern Amateur Championship which will
be held July 14-17 at the historic Shoal Creek Golf and Country in
Birmingham, Alabama.
Dagerman, who completed his sophomore year with the Eagles in
2009-10, qualified for a spot in the 104th Southern
Amateur Championship after recently shooting a four-under 68 at the
Dallas Athletic Club. This past year, Dagerman earned second
team All-America status following his 13th-place finish
at the NCAA Division III Championships with his 72-hole effort of
294 tying the school record for the lowest score at the NCAAs.
There will be 168 players at the championship site to begin play,
some of who earned exemptions while others had to qualify at
regional sites. After 36 holes the field will be reduced to the low
66 scorers and ties for the final 36 holes of play.
The Southern Amateur dates back to 1902. Atlanta native and Emory
University Hall of Fame member Bobby Jones won the Southern Amateur
three times (1917, 1920, and 1922).
There are several two-time winners of the Southern Amateur who
have made it onto the PGA Tour. These include Fred Haas, Lanny
Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard and Webb Simpson.
Shoal Creek has hosted many prestigious tournaments
including the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championships as well as the 1986
U.S. Amateur.
Gregor Main of UCLA won the 2009 Southern Amateur, which was hosted
by the Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn., with a 16-under
score of 272.
