Emory Golf Opens Season At Rhodes College Invitational
The No. 14-ranked Emory University golf team opens the fall
portion of its schedule this coming Sunday and Monday (Sept. 20-21)
when it competes at the Rhodes College Invitational. The
Invitational will be played at the 7,024-yards, par-72 Tunica (MS)
National Golf Resort.
This year's field includes eight squads that are ranked among the
top 25 NCAA Division III teams in the Golf World/NIKE Golf
Preseason Coaches' Poll including four of the top six. 2009
Division III national champion, defending Rhodes College
Invitational titlist and No. 1-ranked Oglethorpe is in this year's
21-team field as is No. 2 Huntingdon College, No. 5 UT-Tyler and
No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan.
Head Coach Mike Philips enters his 27th season in charge of the
Eagles' program, and returns a number of key personnel from last
year's unit that posted a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Division
III Championships.
The Eagles lose seniors Jeremy Evans, Patrick Cohn, Sean Madgett
and Will Gallagher from last year but welcome back a solid stable
of veterans including sophomore Ryan Dagerman, a
2009 First Team All-University Athletic Association honoree and
participant in the recently held US Amateur. Dagerman ended
2008-09 as the squad leader in strokes per round (76.5).
Junior Dan Kmetz, another First Team All-UAA
performer from last season, is back in the fold and, though not
competing this weekend, will be looked to provide consistency after
ranking third in scoring average last year. Seniors
John Ross and Shane Miller aim to
get their campaigns off to a good start at the Invitational while
sophomore Mike Mullavey and freshman
Thomas Mally are slated to compete as well.
The Eagles came in seventh out of 21 teams in the 2008 Rhodes
Invitational.
