Emory Golf Team Eyes Jekyll Island Invitational
Fresh off a first-place finish at the University Athletic
Association Championships, the 20th -ranked Emory golf
team continues its spring schedule this Friday through Sunday (Mar.
18-20) when it competes in the 12th Annual Jekyll Island
Collegiate Invitational. The 54-hole tourney will be held at
the 6,620-yard, par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.
This year's field will be comprised of approximately 30 teams
including 11 squads that are ranked among the top 25 in the
Division III ranks. Among the schools that will be looking to take
home the crown include No. 2 Huntingdon College, No. 3 Methodist
University, No. 4 La Verne, No. 6 Greensboro and No. 8
Centre.
Emory is hoping for continued momentum from the UAA Championships
where the Eagles captured the program’s 13th
conference title and first since 2008. Senior Nick Szem led a
strong second-round effort by firing a six-under 66, tying a school
record, en route to a second-place individual finish with a
one-under effort of 143. Senior Charles Raindre (145) claimed
third place while junior Ryan Dagerman (148) held down the No. 5
position. Junior Michael Mullavey rounded out the
team’s scorers with his 150 tying for seventh. Szem, Raindre
and Dagerman all earned All-UAA First Team recognition while
Mullavey was a second-team honoree. All four players will
represent Emory at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational as
will freshman Johnathan Chen who also competed at the UAAs.
The Monarchs of Methodist enter this year’s Invitational as
the defending champion, outdistancing runner-up Huntingdon College
by 24 shots in. Emory recorded an 11th-place
showing in the 27-team field in 2010.
