Emory Golf Team Brings Home UAA Championship
The No. 20-ranked Emory golf team used an exceptional
second-round performance on Sunday to bring home the
program’s first University Athletic Association championship
since 2008. This year’s 36-hole event was held at the
6,768-yard, par-72 Red Tail Golf Course in Sorrento, Florida.
The Eagles shot a final-day score of four-under 284, fourth-lowest
in school history, to finish with a 586, two strokes of runner-up
Rochester (299-289), who entered the final round three strokes
ahead of Emory. Carnegie Mellon posted a third-place
performance of 626 (317-309) while New York University was fourth
at 633 (316-317).
Spearheading Emory’s Sunday effort was senior Nick Szem whose
six-under 66 tied him for the lowest individual round in school
history. Szem finished with a one-under 143 that was good for
second place in the field behind Nicholas Palladino of Rochester
who manufactured a four-under 140 (73-67), the best effort in UAA
history. Senior Charles Raindre aided in Emory’s run to
the title with a one-under 71 to finish at 145, tying for
third. Junior Ryan Dagerman was the next Eagle on the
scoreboard at 148 (76-72), good for fifth place and Michael
Mullavey rounded out the team’s scorers with a 150
(75-75).
The first-place performance was extra sweet for Emory head coach
Mike Phillips who was coaching in his final conference championship
after announcing his plans to retire following the end of the
season. The only golf coach that Emory has known since the
program began in 1983, this weekend’s title marked the
13th time that Phillips has guided the Eagles to the UAA
crown. Phillips, along with assistant coach John Sjoberg, was
named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
Szem, Raindre and Dagerman landed All-UAA First Team honors while
Mullavey was a second-team performer.
