Emory Men's Basketball Edged At Brandeis

(Feb. 20) -  Brandeis University junior Kenny Small scored a game-high 18 points to paced three double-figure scorers in a win over Emory University Friday evening.  The Judges upped their overall mark to 15-8, 8-4 in the University Athletic Association following a 65-54 win over the Eagles who slipped to 6-17 in overall play, 1-11 in the league.

Emory outshot the host Judges from the field, 42.0 percent (21-of-50) to 34.7 percent (17-of-49), and finished the contest with a 33-29 edge in rebounding.  However, Brandeis accounted for 20 more points from the foul line than Emory, sinking 28-of-33 from the charity stripe while the Eagles converted eight-of-nine.  The Judges knocked down 17-of-20 of their free throw attempts during the second half of action.

Emory trailed by just one point, 38-37, with 14:51 remaining in the game following a bucket by junior Chad Hixon, but Brandeis rattled off a 15-4 burst over the next five minutes to take a 53-41 advantage with 9:58 left. A trey by freshman Austin Claunch got the Eagles to within nine points, 61-52, with 4:39 on the clock but Emory could only generate only two more points the rest of the way.

Hixon led Emory with 11 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the campaign.  Hixon has scored in double digits in 14 games this season and in eight of his last nine outings.  Juniors Daniel Curtin and Anthony Fernandez along with sophomore Julien Williams all recorded eight points in the cause.

In a closely played first half that saw a total of eight lead changes and five ties, Brandeis ended the first half with a 30-28 edge.  Emory's biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes of action came with 3:42 remaining when freshman Alex Gulotta knocked down his second three pointer of the game to give the Eagles a 25-20 lead.  However, the Judges closed out the stanza on a 10-3 run to take the lead into the locker room.  Emory outshot the home team, 40.7 percent (11-of-27) to 37.5 percent (9-of-24) and held an 18-14 edge on the glass.  Brandeis countered by sinking 11-of-13 from the charity stripe while the Eagles converted three of their four opportunities.  Gulotta and Fernandez paced the team's scoring attack with six points apiece in the half.

Emory returns to action on Sunday when it plays at New York University.
