Emory Men's Basketball Posts Double-Overtime Win Against NYU

(Feb. 22) -  Junior Anthony Fernandez scored a team-high 19 points to pace four double-figure scorers in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a double-overtime victory at New York University Sunday afternoon.  The Eagles raised their overall mark to 7-17, 2-11 in the University Athletic Association following an 80-79 decision over the Violets who slipped to 15-9 in overall action, 4-9 in the league.

Fernandez sank seven-of-14 from the floor and five-of-seven from the charity stripe while adding five rebounds.  Junior Chad Hixon totaled 15 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.  Rounding out the team's double-figure scorers were freshmen Alex Gulotta and Austin Claunch with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Claunch also doled out a season-high nine assists in the triumph.

Emory trailed by three points in the first overtime, 70-67, with 1:41 remaining but a three-point field goal by Gulotta with 30 seconds remaining knotted the scored and forced the second extra session.  The Violets went ahead by a point early on but a trey by sophomore Julien Williams with 3:19 on the clock put the Eagles ahead for good.  Emory stretched its lead to four points less than a minute later when Hixon came through with a bucket.  A pair free throws by both Fernandez and Claunch down the stretch helped seal the win for Emory.

Emory shot 43.9 percent from the floor (29-of-66) and 75.0 percent from the foul line (15-of-20) with its performance from the charity stripe a big factor in the outcome as NYU was able to convert only 12-of-25.  The Eagles pounded the boards hard and finished with a 47-36 edge in rebounding. 

Emory closes out the season next Saturday (Feb. 28) with a home game against Case Western Reserve starting at noon.
