Emory University senior Daniel Curtin pumped in a season-high 22
points and sophomore guard Austin Claunch added 13 points and 10
assists in helping the Eagles to a victory over Greensboro College
Thursday evening at the Woodruff PE Center. Emory snapped a
two-game losing streak and raised its overall record to 5-3
following an 88-74 triumph over the Pride who saw their record slip
to 5-5.
Emory shot a season-high 57.9 percent from the floor (33-of-57)
compared to Greensboro's 46.0 percent (29-of-63). The Eagles
were on fire during the second half of play, knocking down 75
percent (21-of-28) of their field goal opportunities while posting
a 53-44 scoring advantage. Emory held a decisive 39-23 edge
on the glass and was led in that department by senior Chad Hixon
who snagged a season-high 10 boards.
The game was tied 27-27 with 3:29 left in the first half before
Emory closed out the stanza with an 8-3 run, keyed by a pair of
three-pointers by Curtin, to take a 35-30 edge at
halftime.
Emory built is lead to 12 points a little less than four minutes
into the second half as five different players scored in a 13-6 run
to open the frame. After a trey by Greensboro's Chakiris Moss
cut the margin to nine points, Emory responded with eight straight
points to take a commanding 17-point cushion, 58-41, with 11:50 on
the clock. From there, the closest Greensboro would get was
11 points on three occasions.
Curtin ended the night hitting eight-of-13 from the floor,
including six-of-eight from beyond the arc. Claunch sank
five-of-nine of his field goal attempts en route to his sixth
double-figure scoring effort of the campaign. His 10 assists
marked the second time this year that he reached double digits in
that department. Joining Curtin and Claunch as double-figure
scorers were Hixon (12 pts.), sophomore Corey Spraggins (12 pts.)
and junior Julien Williams (11 pts.).
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 19) when it closes out a
five-game homestand with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Hanover
College.
NOTES - Emory is 4-1 this season when leading at
the half ... Emory's 75.0 percent mark from the field in the second
half is the highest mark by a Zimmerman-coached team ... Curtin
moved into 10th place on the school's all-time
three-point field goal list with his six treys upping his total to
102 ... Curtin passed former sharpshooter Adrian Sosa's total of 99
... Hixon's double-double this evening was his first of the year
and third of his Emory career ... Spraggins has shot 50 percent or
better from the floor in six games and has connected on 56.6
percent (30-of-53) of his attempts.
