Emory Men's Basketball Defeats LaGrange In Home Opener

Box

The Emory men's basketball team made a successful 2009-10 home debut Wednesday evening as it registered a decisive triumph over LaGrange College.  The Eagles raised their record to 4-1 following a 102-73 verdict over the Panthers who fell to 2-5.

Emory shot a season-high 56.3 percent from the floor (40-of-71) and finished the contest with a 45-23 rebounding edge that included a 16-7 bulge on the offensive end.  All 15 of the Eagles who saw action found their way into the scoring column led by senior Daniel Curtin and freshman Alex Greven, each of whom totaled a team-high 12 points.  Sophomore Corey Spraggins rounded out the squad's double-digit scorers with 10 points, his fourth outing of double figures this season.  Also turning in a solid effort off the bench was sophomore Justin Resnick who dished out a career-high seven assists while pacing the club with five rebounds in 11 minutes of action.

Emory held a 33-30 advantage with 3:12 left in the first half before closing out the stanza with a 9-0 run that gave it a 42-30 lead at halftime.  Sophomore Austin Claunch scored all nine of his points during the opening 20 minutes of action while Spraggins added eight.

Seven points by Curtin helped Emory start the second half with a 16-7 run that pushed its lead to 56-39 with 16:45 left in the game.  A pair of free throws by Nic Whitfield drew LaGrange to within 14 points with 13:38 on the clock, but Emory put the game away with a 17-1 sprint, with seven different players scoring, that gave a 78-49 cushion with 10:27 left.

Emory's 102 points tied the 11th highest single-game mark in school history and represented the third time during Zimmerman's tenure as head coach that the Eagles cracked the century mark.

Emory returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 5) when it opens University Athletic Association play against the University of Rochester in a 4:00 p.m. start.
