Emory Men's Basketball Drops UAA Opener To Rochester

Box

The Emory men's basketball team opened the University Athletic Association portion of its schedule with a setback to a hot-shooting University of Rochester squad Saturday afternoon at the Woodruff PE Center.  The Yellowjackets boosted their record to 6-1 following an 83-62 triumph over the Eagles who slipped to 4-2.

Rochester connected on 64.3 percent of its field goal attempts during the final 20 minutes of action, and used that keen marksmanship to post a 49-33 second-half scoring advantage. For the game, UR hit on 57.7 percent from the field (30-of-52) while Emory checked in at 48.1 percent (26-of-54).  The Yellowjackets made the most of their three-point opportunities, sinking 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from beyond the arc compared to the Eagles' 38.5 percent (5-of-13).  In addition, Rochester capitalized on Emory turnovers, picking up 28 points off 21 Eagles' mistakes.

Just past the midway point of the first half, Rochester held a one-point lead before rattling off seven unanswered points to post a 31-23 advantage with 3:46 remaining. A basket by senior Anthony Fernandez capped a 6-0 Emory run and drew the home club to within two points, 31-29, with 2:19 left in the stanza.  Eventually, the Yellowjackets went into halftime with a 34-29 margin.

Emory faced an eight-point deficit with 14:22 remaining before Rochester hit eight of its next 11 field goal attempts to spur it to a decisive 19-7 sprint that boosted its lead to 68-48 with 9:04 on the clock. From there, Emory would get no closer than 17 points as it dropped its first home decision in two outings.

Fernandez was Emory's lone player to register double-figure scoring with 10 points.  Junior Julien Williams chipped in nine points while snatching a team-high six rebounds.

Rochester's Nate Novosel led all players with 17 points.

Emory returns to action on Monday (Dec. 7) when it entertains Oglethorpe University in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
