Emory Men's Basketball Falls To Furman In Exhibition
The Emory men’s basketball team battled Division I
opponent Furman University on even terms for a half Friday evening
before seeing the Paladins pull away in the second half for a 74-49
win in exhibition action on the Furman campus.
Leading the Emory scoring effort was freshman Jake Davis with 12
points. Davis also led all Eagles with seven rebounds.
Junior guard Austin Claunch picked up 11 points on five-of-seven
field goal shooting and also doled out four assists in 30 minutes
of action.
Emory led for the majority of the first half and enjoyed a 15-5
advantage with 11:51 left in the stanza following a three-point
field goal by sophomore Michael Friedberg. The Eagles still
held a 25-17 lead with 6:00 remaining after a trey by Alex
Greven. However, the Paladins closed out the half on a 13-2
run to take a 30-27 margin at the intermission. Emory shot a
respectable 45.8 percent from the floor (11-of-24) during the
opening 20 minutes of play including 44.4 percent from beyond the
arc. Furman connected on 45.5 percent of its field goal tries
(10-of-22) and hit three-of-seven from three-point range.
Furman used a decisive 21-5 outburst over the first 8:38 of the
second half to take an insurmountable 51-32 lead. The host
Paladins were successful on 50 percent from the field in final 20
minutes while the Eagles were able to convert just 25.7 percent
(9-of-35).
For the game, Furman hit 48.1 percent from the field (26-of-54)
while Emory posted a 33.9 percent mark (20-of-59). The Eagles
held their own on the glass, being outboarded by only a 38-33
margin. Furman did hold a 17-12 advantage in the points off
turnovers category along with a 25-11 margin in bench points.
Emory opens its regular season on Nov. 17 at home against
Oglethorpe University.
