Emory Mens Soccer Heads North for Two Matches this Weekend
The Emory University men's soccer team will look to build on its
three-match winning streak this weekend, as the Eagles will head to
North Carolina to face Greensboro College at 1:00 PM on Saturday,
and Guilford College at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
Fans can follow live-updating statistics of both games by clicking
on the corresponding links on either the ‘Schedule' page or
on the ‘Upcoming Events' tab on the right side of the Emory
men's soccer homepage. There will also be a video webcast of
Sunday's match at Guilford, which can be accessed in the same
manner. All of the links are also posted at the bottom of
this article for easy access.
Emory will enter the game with a 3-1-0 record this season,
including three-consecutive victories and a perfect 3-0-0 record
against Division III opponents. The Eagles are ranked eighth
in the Atlantic South Region, and are coming off a pair of wins
against regional opponents in Methodist University and Eastern
Mennonite University last weekend. Emory is 2-0-0 away from
the Woodruff P.E. Center this season.
Greensboro will enter Saturday's contest with a 0-3-1 record in
2009, including a 0-1-0 record at home this season. During
last season's matchup, Christopher Howie scored a
goal helping the Eagles defeat the Pride 3-1.
The two teams will be facing each other for the 18th-consecutive
season. Of the previous 21 meetings, at least one of the
teams has been ranked nationally 14 times, and both teams have been
ranked in four of the matchups. The Pride initially dominated
the matchup, winning seven of the first eight matches, but more
recently, the Eagles have won three-straight and five of the last
seven over Greensboro. Overall, Emory is just 9-12 all-time
against the Pride. Emory and Greensboro have met three times
in the NCAA Tournament, with the Pride winning each of the three
postseason games. There have been five overtime matches
between the teams, with Greensboro holding a 3-2-0 advantage.
Perhaps the most meaningful match of the series for the Eagles came
during the 1998 season, when Emory hosted Greensboro on October
13th. With the Eagles trailing 4-2 with just 23 minutes
remaining, All-American Ahmed Mohyledin scored two goals (including
the game winner with less than two minutes remaining) and assisted
on another to give Emory its first victory over the Pride since
1993. Mohyeldin finished the 5-4 win with four goals and one
assist.
Guilford currently stands at 4-2-1 this season, and will face
Randolph-Macon on Friday before taking on the Eagles on
Sunday. The Quakers have won three of their last four
matches, and are 2-1-1 at home this season. Emory is 2-0-1
all time against Guilford, including an 8-0 win during their
meeting last season. In that game, Adam Waxman scored two
goals for the Eagles, while Howie recorded three assists.
Emory Notes:
Emory midfielder Christopher Howie currently
ranks fifth in Division III with 1.25 assists per game... His five
assists through four games put him on pace for 23 on the season...
The Eagles currently rank 69th in the nation in scoring
offense with 2.5 goals per game... Eight different Emory players
have scored goals this season, while 12 different Eagles have
recorded at least one point... Emory goalkeeper Trenton
Spindler was named the UAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete
of the Week last week, after allowing just one goal in 180
minutes... The sophomore has lowered his season goals against
average to 0.86 this season... The Eagles have not allowed a first
half goal this season.
