Eagles End Regular Season with 1-0 Win Over Sewanee

The Emory University men's soccer team ended its 2009 regular season on a high note, as freshman Alex Scott's goal lifted the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over the University of the South.

After a scoreless first half, Scott headed in a long throw in from sophomore Zach Samuels in the 56th minute of play to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.  It was the third goal of the season for Scott, and Samuels' sixth assist of the campaign.

Scott has now scored a goal in each of Emory's last two games, each having an impact on the game's outcome.  After scoring the game-tying goal in yesterday's 2-2 tie with #11 Carnegie Mellon University, Scott struck again today with his first game-winning goal of the campaign.

Sophomore Trenton Spindler made four saves in goal during the contest, recording his fifth shutout of the season and lowering his goals against average to 0.85.  Meanwhile, Emory's defense allowed just 11 shots in the game, only four of which were on goal.

Emory's offense was able to control the ball through most of the contest, especially in the first half.  The Eagles were able to take 21 shots during the game, including nine on goal.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 12-4-2 record, despite losing 11 seniors from the previous season, while Sewanee dropped to 8-10-1 with the loss.  Emory will now await the announcement of the selections to the NCAA Division III Tournament, set to be released on Sunday night, November 8th.  Check EmoryAthletics.com for updated information as soon as it is made available.
