#10 Emory Defeats Greensboro 9-0 in Homecoming Game
The Emory University men's soccer team set a new school
record with its seventh-consecutive shutout, and three different
Eagles scored two goals apiece, during a 9-0 win over Greensboro
College in the Homecoming game on Saturday.
In front of a crowd of 300 fans, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0
lead in the first half, off a pair of goals from junior
Kamron Zia, his third and fourth scores of the
season.
In the second half, Zach Samuels opened the
scoring with his fourth goal of the season, while Dehmeh Smith and Michael Scannapieco each scored
a pair during the frame as well. Andrew Natalino added on his fifth goal of the season on a
penalty kick, while Ben Dhiman scored his second,
to cap off the scoring for Emory.
Junior Nao Masuda assisted on three of the goals
in the second half, his first three helpers of the campaign.
Natalino, Christopher Howie, David Langton, Dhiman and Andrew Jones all
assisted on goals as well during the contest.
Meanwhile, Emory's defense allowed just two shots during the
contest, only one of which was on goal. Emory has allowed
just one goal this season for a 0.11 team goals against
average. The Eagles have not had a goal scored against them
in the last 703 minutes and 43 seconds of game time.
In the first Emory game over the last two seasons not started by
goalkeeper Trenton Spindler, sophomore
Alex Wong filled in admirably, earning the victory
and converting the only save opportunity of the game, in over 57
minutes played. Aram Keteyian and
Andrew Goldblum each made appearances in goal as
well for the Eagles.
The nine goals match the second-best single game scoring output in
the program's history, previously accomplished in 1984
against Georgia College and on September 24, 1996 against
Oglethorpe. It was the most goals scored by the team since
September 19, 2001, when the Eagles scored a program-record 13
against LaGrange College.
Emory improved to 9-0-0 with the win, while Greensboro dropped to
3-5-1 on the season with the loss. Emory will now turn its
attention towards the University Athletic Association, as the
Eagles will play their first conference game next Sunday at 2:30 PM
EST at Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis.
