Sherr Named First UAA Athlete of the Week of 2013

Emory University sophomore center back Matt Sherr was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Defensive Athlete of the Week for Men's Soccer, after helping the Eagles win the 2013 Sonny Carter Invitational last weekend.

Sherr was named to the Sonny Carter Invitational All-Tournament Team for the second-straight season, after helping lead an Eagles backline that did not allow a goal during his 165 minutes on the field over two games.  He played 75 minutes during the Eagles' 6-2 win over Marian University (Wis.) on Saturday, holding the Sabres scoreless on just one off-target shot during his time on the field.  In addition, the center back notched his first goal of the season and third of his career, heading in a corner kick in the 86th minute for the Eagles' fifth goal of the contest.  On Sunday, he played all 90 minutes of the Eagles' 1-0 win over Mississippi College, helping the team to the shutout win and surrendering just seven shots to the Choctaws, only three of which were on goal.

This was the first conference athlete of the week honor of Sherr's collegiate career.

Sherr and the Eagles claimed the team championship at the Sonny Carter Invitational for the 10th time in 13 years, and opened their season with a 2-0-0 record for the first time since 2010.  Emory will return to action with its first road games of the 2013 season this weekend, playing at Averett University on Friday and Guilford College on Sunday.

The following Emory Men's Soccer players have been named UAA Athletes of the Week:
