Eagles Continue to Rack-Up Qualifying Times at the Miami Invitational
Emory University continued to perform well in their 2009 finale,
as the Eagles added on a combined eight NCAA ‘A' cut times
and 71 ‘B' cut marks during the second day of competition at
the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
The Emory women scored 741 points through the end of the second day
of competition, placing them behind Miami University (1218 points)
and Florida Gulf Coast University (748 points), both NCAA Division
I institutions. The Emory men ended the second day in fourth
place with 758 points, behind Division I Oakland University (930)
and Wright State University (853) and Division III Denison
University (816.5).
During the morning preliminaries, the Emory men totaled 14 NCAA
qualifying times, including an automatic qualifying mark from
senior John Petroff, who finished first in the
preliminaries of the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.86.
Later in the day, it would be Tom DiMarco who
would record an ‘A' cut time in the 200-yard butterfly, as
the senior finished second in the event with a time of 1:51.36,
while Petroff finished third with a ‘B' cut time of
1:51.36. Other top-three finishes in the finals on Friday
night included senior Kevin Yamada in the 100-yard
breaststroke (57.17 seconds), freshman Peter
O'Brien in the 400-yard individual medley (4:00.83),
Brad Sloan in the 50-yard freestyle (21.18
seconds), the Eagles' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alex
Boettcher, DiMarco, Jared Dubnow and
Brad Sloan (1:24.24) and the 400-medley relay team
of Dubnow, Yamada, Petroff and DiMarco (3:24.09).
Emory recorded a total of 14 qualifying times in the third session
of the meet, including the ‘A' cut time from DiMarco, giving
the Eagles a total of two automatic and 27 provisional qualifying
times through Friday night.
For the women in the morning session, junior April
Whitley set a new school record and claimed second in the
preliminary swim of the 100-yard breaststroke with an automatic
qualifying mark of 1:03.12, while senior Ruth
Westby finished first in the preliminaries of the 200-yard
freestyle with a time of 1:50.00, an ‘A' cut mark and the
fourth-fastest time in school history. The Emory women added on 22
additional provisional qualifying times during the morning
preliminaries.
The Eagles 200-freestyle relay team of Westby, Lillian
Ciardelli, Morgan Klinzing and
Claire Pavlak opened the evening session on Friday
with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with an
‘A' cut time of 1:33.83. Westby also continued her
strong showing with an ‘A' cut time and first-place finish in
the 200-yard freestyle, and a third-place finish in the 50-yard
freestyle with a ‘B' mark of 23.66. In addition,
juniors Liz Horvat and Whitley each recorded their
second ‘A' cut time of the meet, Horvat with a second-place
finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:22.95) and Whitley with
a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.52).
The Emory women added on 23 provisional qualifying times during the
late session on Friday, giving the team a total of eight ‘A'
cut times and 47 ‘B' cut times during the meet.
The Miami Invitational will continue on Saturday morning at 9:00 am
with the preliminary events, followed by the finals at 6:00 pm to
conclude the competition.
