Emory Swimming & Diving Wins Season-Opening Meets against Davidson

The Emory University men's and women's swimming and diving teams started their seasons off on a positive note, coming away with a pair of wins against Division I Davidson College.

The Emory men earned a 169-106 victory at the meet, while the women defeated Davidson 164-130.

The Emory women record 16 ‘B' Cut times during the meet, including three in the 100-yard freestyle from senior Ruth Westby (52.18), freshman Ann Wolber (52.71) and senior Lillian Ciardelli (52.89).  Westby also recorded a provisional time in the 200-yard freestyle, and Ciardelli in the 50-yard freestyle, joining freshman Leslie Hackler (200 free and 100 fly) and junior April Whitley (100 breast and 200 breast) as Eagles to record multiple ‘B' cut times in individual events during the meet.

Also recording provisional qualifying times were freshman Jackie Schneider (100 back), sophomore Anne Culpepper (200 back), freshman Taryn Lushinsky (200 back), junior Katie Mroz (200 breast), and junior Liz Horvat (500 free).  The Eagles' women's 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays also earned provisional qualifying marks.

For the men, senior John Petroff paced the way with a first place finish and provisional qualifying time of 51.13 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly.  Freshman Peter O'Brien also recorded a provisional time with a mark of 2:07.87 and a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The Emory squads each improved to 1-0 on the season with the win, while the Wildcats' teams both dropped to 0-3 this year.

Emory will return to action on Halloween Day, as the Eagles will travel to Wilmington, NC to face the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 10:30 AM.  The women's team will also be facing the University of Houston at next Saturday's meet.
