Augustyn & Pavlak Named UAA Athletes of the Week

Emory University juniors Patrick Augustyn and Claire Pavlak were named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for men’s and women’s swimming and diving, respectively, based on their performances during the Emory Fall Invitational.

Augustyn recorded five top-three finishes and one NCAA ‘B’ cut time during the Emory Fall Invitational last weekend.  He finished first out of 40 swimmers in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:53.48.  Augustyn would finish first as part of two Emory relays as well, swimming the butterfly leg of the Eagles’ 200-yard medley relay (1:36.70) and the 400-yard medley relay (3:31.12).  He also scored for Emory with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.87), a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (50.87 seconds) and a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.51).  He totaled 35.5 points for Emory during the meet, helping the men to a first-place team finish with 405 total points.

Pavlak was a part of six NCAA ‘B’ cut performances during the Emory Fall Invitational last weekend.  Individually, Pavlak recorded provisional qualifying performances with times of 23.95 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle (fourth place) and 52.51 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle (fourth place).  She also recorded ‘B’ cut times as part of Emory’s 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.81), 200-yard medley relay (1:47.44), 400-yard medley relay (3:54.71), and 400-freestyle relay (3:32.23), all of which finished in first place.  Pavlak, a three-time National Champion and eight-time all-American, scored 36 of Emory’s 425.5 points during the meet, helping the Eagles to a first-place team finish.

This was the first career UAA honor for Augustyn, who transferred to Emory from the University of Notre Dame before the start of the season.  It was the third career UAA Athlete of the Week nod for Pavlak, who earned the honor on February 1st and March 22nd of last season.

Emory divers will return to action this weekend at the Georgia Invitational, while the swimmers will wait until December 2nd to return to the pool at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
