Spooner Named D-III Swimmer of the Week
Emory University swimmer Matt Spooner was named
the Counsilman-Hunsaker NCAA Division III Men’s Swimmer of
the Week last week, based on his performance at the University
Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.
Spooner was named the UAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year after
finishing first in three events and setting a record at the
conference championship meet. Spooner won the 400-yard
individual medley with a UAA record time of 4:01.08, good for an
NCAA ‘B’ cut. He won the 200-yard individual
medley as well with an ‘A’ cut time of 1:51.90, just a
hundredth of a second shy of the UAA record. Spooner swam the
third leg of the Eagles’ 800-yard freestyle relay team, which
won the event with a ‘B’ cut time of 6:50.29. He
also finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of
1:53.83.
Spooner became the first Eagle to be named UAA Swimmer of the Year
since 2000. His performance helped the Eagles to their
13th-consecutive UAA Championship.
Spooner joins teammate Peter O’Brien
(February 9th) as the two Emory athletes to earn the
Swimmer of the Week honor this season.
Spooner and the rest of the Eagles will return to action later in
the month, traveling to Knoxville, TN for the NCAA Division III
Swimming and Diving Championships from March 23rd
– 26th.
