Eagles Fall to Division I Programs Georgia and Georgia Tech

The Emory University swimming and diving team saw a number of its members turn in strong performances during the squad's first road dual meet of the season, but it was not enough for the Eagles to overcome NCAA Division I opponents Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.

On the women's side, Emory lost to Georgia Tech 154-87, and to Georgia 155-80.  The Emory men suffered a 179-64 loss to Georgia Tech, and a 154-81 loss to Georgia.

Senior April Whitley recorded the best finish of the day for Emory, claiming third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a qualifying time of 1:06.47.  Senior Liz Horvat swam a NCAA 'B' cut in the 400-yard individual medley, recording a time of 4:32.78 in the event and finishing fifth.  Also fairing well in the distance events was junior Anne Culpepper, who had a 'B' cut time of 5:04.52 with a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.  Sophomore Leslie Hackler finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, and her time of 58.15 seconds was just two-hundredths of a second shy of the provisional qualifying mark.

In addition, Emory's 400-yard medley relay of freshman Sadie Nennig, senior April Whitley, Hackler, and junior Claire Pavlak swam a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:54.97 and finished fourth, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Ann Wolber, freshman Suzanne Lemberg, senior Morgan Klinzing and Pavlak finished fourth with a 'B' cut time of 1:36.91.

For the Emory men, sophomore Peter O'Brien has the top finish of the day by an Eagle, claiming third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.48 seconds.  The other best finishes of the day for the men came from junior Patrick Augustyn in the 100-yard butterfly and freshman Ross Spock in the 100-yard backstroke, who each placed fourth.  Augustyn recorded a time of 50.91 seconds, while Spock notched a mark of 52.67 seconds.

Emory's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Spock, freshman Ryan Bass, sophomore Sam Sanders and sophomore Richard Upton also finished fourth with a time of 1:26.50.

With the losses, both Emory's men's and women's squads dropped to 0-3 on the season.  All three decisions for both teams have come against NCAA Division I programs.

The Eagles will return to action on November 13th and 14th, as the team will host the Emory Fall Invitational at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
