2006-07 Athletes Of The Week

(May 21) - Emory University senior Yoji Masuoka helped the Eagles to runner-up team honors then teamed with Michael Goodwin to garner runner-up honors in the doubles competition at the 2007 NCAA Division III Championships.

In the team competition, Masuoka joined with Goodwin to post a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles and accounted for the winning point in a 5-4 semifinal win over Middlebury College, posting a 4-6, 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker), 7-5 triumph at No. 2 singles.

In the doubles competition, Masuoka and Goodwin advanced to the championship match with wins over opponents from Denison University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and UC-Santa Cruz before dropping a three-set decision (6-7, 6-4, 6-2) to the top-ranked tandem from UC-Santa Cruz.

Masuoka also competed in the singles competition, winning his opening match before being eliminated in the second round.


(Apr. 30)- Emory University junior Hardy Ehlers went 2-0 in singles play and finished with a 2-1 slate in doubles action in helping the Eagles to the University Athletic Association championship.

Ehlers disposed of Chicago's Steve Saltarelli, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles in the semifinals before rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 4 against Danny Levy of Washington University in the title match. Ehlers' win proved to be the clinching point that allowed Emory to claim its 18th straight UAA crown and 19th in 20 seasons.

In doubles, Ehlers joined forces with freshman Oliver Lopp to record an opening-round 8-0 victory over Rochester's team of Maher/Kornhauser. In the semifinals, Ehlers and Lopp came away with an 8-4 verdict over Chicago's tandem of Brinker/Schneider.

So far this year, Ehlers has compiled a singles record of 12-5.


(Apr. 3)- Emory University sophomore Michael Goodwin went 1-1 in singles acion and was on the winning side of a pair of doubles contests this past weekend.

Goodwin helped Emory to a 5-4 win over Columbus State by posting a 6-1, 6-3 triumph against Guillermo Echevarria at No. 1 singles. In doubles action, he teamed with Yoji Masuoka to record an 8-6 decision over the tandem of Djuric and Van Rensburg.

In an 8-1 win over Lindsey Wilson, Goodwin and Masuoka combined for another win at No. 1 doubles.


(Mar. 26) -- Emory University junior Hardy Ehlers earned two wins in singles action and two in doubles play in helping the No. 2-ranked Eagles to wins over No. DePauw and Piedmont College.

Ehlers recorded a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over DePauw's Scott Swanson at No. 3 singles before moving up to the No. 1 spot where he defeated Piedmont's Mike Robertson, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, he and Oliver Lopp bested DePauw's Jeff Zanchelli and Kortney Keith. He then joined up with Mark Boren to register an 8-1 verdict at No. 2 doubles over Piedmont's Joe Leonardo and Mike Madden.


(Mar. 19)- Emory University junior Hardy Ehlers earned three wins in singles action and two in doubles play in helping the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the Stag-Hen Invitational (Mar. 16-17).

Ehlers was triumphant in all three of his matches at No. 4 singles at the Stag-Hen including a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Eric Chow in the championship match of the event. 

In doubles action, he teamed with freshman Chris Jordan at the No. 2 position to earn a win against Ian McGrath and Jon Roberts against Linfield before joining forces with Oliver Lopp to post an 8-6 decision against Drew Brown and Luke Marker of Kalamazoo College.


(Mar. 12) -- Emory University sophomore Mark Boren earned four wins in singles action and two in doubles play in helping the Eagles to four dual-match wins.  Boren opened the week with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Marcelo Peterlini of Berry College at No. 4 singles before moving up to No. 2 singles where he notched a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Wilson Paine of Ferrum and a 6-4, 6-3 verdict against Eckhardt Van der Linde of Oglethorpe.  Against NCAA Division I foe Eric Noble of Davidson University, Boren posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory. 

In doubles, he teamed with freshman Chris Jordan and came away with victories at No. 3 doubles against Oglethorpe and Davidson.


(Feb. 26) -- Emory senior Yoji Masuoka helped the Eagles to a third-place finish at the ITA National Indoor Championships this past weekend (Feb. 23-25) in Mankato, Minnesota.

Masuoka recorded three wins at the No. 2 singles spot while coming up with a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles.

In singles action, Masuoka defeated Randy Loden of Mary Washington, 6-4, 6-2, on Friday in a 9-0 Emory victory. In the Eagles' 3-6 setback to UC-Santa Cruz on Saturday, he rallied to top Jared Kamel, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. In Sunday's third-place match, he contributed to a 6-3 win, registering a 6-4, 6-2 decision over John Kauss.

In doubles play, he teamed with Michael Goodwin to defeat Randy Loden/Eddie Carver of Mary Washington, 8-3, before beating Matt Seeberger/Ilya Gendelman of UC-Santa Cruz, 8-6.


(Oct. 16) -- Emory University sophomore Michael Goodwin (Rockville, MD) has been named by the University Athletic Association as men's tennis player of the week following his performance at the ITA Small College National Championships in Fort Myers, Florida.

Goodwin advanced to the Division III singles finals of the event, defeating Mikhail Gurevich of NYU, 6-0, 6-3, in his opening-round match before rallying for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, win over John Watts of Washington Univ. in the semifinals.  In the finals, Goodwin dropped a three-set decision to John Starr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. 


(Sept. 25) -- Sophomore Michael Goodwin captured the singles title at the ITA Regional Championships held at the University of the South this past weekend.  Goodwin, who entered the 64-player singles draw as the No. 1 seed, captured five matches en route to the title.  After breezing through his first three matches, he defeated No. 3 seed Kareem Mansur of Rhodes College, 7-5, 6-4, before topping teammate Mark Boren, 6-0, 6-1 in the title match.  In addition to his championship effort in singles play, he joined forces with sophomore Michael Kaufman (Farmington Hills, MI) to win the doubles title with the pair defeating Emory's Mark Boren and David Caplan in the title match.
