Emory Players Advance In NCAA Singles Championships
Emory University seniors Michael Goodwin and Mark Boren have
advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Singles
Championships after posting victories in their opening matches.
Goodwin, seeded No. 5 in the 32-player field, defeated Jeremy
Weinberger of Williams College in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Boren earned his way to the next round after topping No. 4 seed
Michael Greenberg of Kenyon College, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Chris
Goodwin was the third Emory entry in the singles action but fell
short against Will Zhang of the University of Chicago, 5-7,
3-6.
Boren's next opponent will be Ben Stein of Bates College while
Goodwin will meet up with either Andrew Giuffrida of Cal Lutheran
or Tomas Piskacek of Kenyon. Both of those matches will be
played later today.
The Goodwin brothers are one of 16 doubles teams taking part in the
Championships and they begin their quest on Friday as well against
Jamie Neely and Oscar Pena of Bowdoin.
