Emory's Michael Goodwin Advances To Semifinals At NCAA D-III Singles Championships
Emory University senior Michael Goodwin will play in the
semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles
Championship Saturday afternoon. Goodwin's opponent will be
Conrad Olson of Middlebury. The match is slated to begin at 4:00
p.m. (EDT) and will be held on the campus of Claremont-Mudd Scipps
(CA). Goodwin, seeded No. 5 in the 32-player field, opened play on
Friday by defeating Jeremy Weinberger of Williams College in
straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Later on in the day, Goodwin stayed
alive with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Tomas Piskacek of Kenyon
College. In a quarterfinal-round played today,
Goodwin advanced to the semis with a hard-fought 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4
decision against Lawrence Wang of Claremont-Mudd Scripps.
Goodwin is the lone Emory player still competing as senior Mark
Boren fell in the round of 16 to Ben Stein of Bates, coming out on
the short end of a 6-4, 6-4 outcome.
The Eagles' doubles team of Michael and Chris Goodwin were one of
16 tandems that opened play in that category and the pair were
eliminated by Bowdoin College's Jamie Neely and Oscar Pena.
