Emory's Goodwin Brothers Earn ITA Honors -- Browning Named South Region Coach Of The Year
Emory University senior Michael Goodwin, along
with his younger brother, Chris, have been
recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for
their outstanding play in 2009 with the pair receiving national
recognition.
Michael was selected as the ITA Senior Player of the Year while
Chris was named the Rookie of the Year. The older
Goodwin finished off his college career in grand style last
weekend, capturing the singles crown at the NCAA Division III Men's
Championship in Claremont, Calif. Goodwin rattled off five
victories en route to the title including three-set matches in the
quarterfinals, semifinals and final. Goodwin, the program's
No. 1 singles player during his four years, finished off the
campaign with an overall record of 18-11. A formidable
doubles performer as well, he and his younger sibling fashioned an
overall mark of 23-7 at the No. 1 position. Goodwin joins
Mark Odgers (2005) as Emory players to have been named Senior
Player of the Year.
Chris Goodwin held down the No. 2 singles post all year and
finished with an overall ledger of 27-6, tying with senior Mark
Boren for most wins on the team. Earlier in the season,
Goodwin, who captured the University Athletic Association Rookie of
the Year honors, battled his way to the championship at the ITA
Regionals and eventually advanced to the title match at the Small
College Championships. He is the fifth Emory player in
program history to earn ITA Rookie of the Year acclaim.
Head Coach John Browning was tabbed as the
Atlantic South Region Coach of the Year for the second time in his
career.
