Emory Men's Tennis Tops Carnegie Mellon -- Advances To Finals Of UAA Championships

The Emory University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 3 in Division III, came away with a win over Carnegie Mellon University Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association Championships.  The Eagles notched their sixth straight victory and upped their overall record to 13-7 following a 5-1 decision over No. 7-ranked Tartans who slipped to 17-5.  With inclement weather in the Pittsburgh area, the match was played indoors at The Club Life.

The Eagles captured two of the three doubles points with the No. 3 tandem of senior Chris Redmond and sophomore Dillon Pottish giving the team a 1-0 lead following an 8-3 triumph over Nikola Ljuboja and Duke Miller. After CMU tied the match with a win at No. 1 doubles, Emory took the lead for good when seniors Oliver Lopp and David Caplan notched an 8-6 decision over Bobby MacTaggart and Alex Nemerov at the No. 2 spot.

Junior Colin Egan boosted Emory’s advantage to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 verdict over Miller at No. 4 singles, while sophomore Chris Goodwin’s 6-2, 6-2 triumph over MacTaggart at No. 2  put the team one point away from clinching.  Pottish then sealed the outcome at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win, his 23rd of the season, over Nemerova.

Emory will play No. 2-ranked and UAA defending champion Washington University on Sunday for the crown. It will mark the fifth straight year that the Eagles and Bears will meet for the league title.  The match is slated to start at 9:00 a.m.
