Emory Men's Tennis Defeated by Washington University At ITA National Indoors

The No. 2-ranked Emory University men's tennis team attempt to
defend its crown at the ITA National Indoor Championships ended
Saturday night as it dropped a hard-fought decision to No. 3-ranked
Washington University in the semifinals. The Eagles saw their
dual record slip to 1-1 following a 5-4 setback to the Bears.
The ITA National Indoor Championships is being hosted by Gustavus
Adolphus.
Wash U. swept the doubles to bolt out to a 3-0 lead. Emory
battled back to within 3-2 following singles victories by junior
Colin Egan at the No.4 spot and by Dillon Pottish, ranked No. 4
nationally, who recorded a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over the nation's
top-ranked D-III player, John Watts. A three-set win by the
Bears' Gary Parizher over freshman Daniel Weingarten upped their
lead to 4-2, but a victory at No. 2 singles by sophomore Chris
Goodwin over Isaac Stein, 6-0, 6-1, kept the Eagles alive.
Danny Levy then sealed the decision for Wash U with a win at No. 6
singles.
Emory advanced to the semis following a 6-3 win over No. 12-ranked
DePauw on Friday. The Eagles trailed by a 2-1 count heading
into the singles action but wins by Goodwin at No. 2 and Pottish at
No. 1 pushed Emory ahead by a 3-2 score. The Tigers
knotted things up when Noah Swiler edged Egan at No. 3
singles. Junior Philipp Overdiek put Emory ahead, 4-3,
after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Andrew Kahn at No. 4, and Weingarten
closed thing out with a come-from-behind three-set win over Hunter
Schouweiler at No. 5 singles.
Emory will meet Kenyon College in the third-place match starting at
9:00 a.m. (CST).
