The No. 2-ranked Emory University men's tennis team starts the
quest for a successful postseason run this weekend when it competes
in the NCAA Division III Regionals. The Eagles of head coach
John Browning travel to Lexington, Virginia, to take part in a
five-team field that includes host and No. 25-ranked Washington
& Lee, The College of New Jersey, Transylvania University and
Wilkes University.
Emory is the top seed and drew an opening-round bye. The
Eagles, 14-7 on the year, will play on Saturday, May 15, in
semifinal action against the winner of the Transylvania-Wilkes
match that will be played on Friday. Saturday's other
semifinal will see Washington & Lee battle TCNJ. The
regional championship will be conducted on Sunday, May
16.
Emory will be returning to action for the first time since the UAA
Championships where it captured first place, the 20th
time in the last 21 seasons it brought home the conference
crown. The Eagles opened the UAAs with a 9-0 decision over
Rochester before posting a 5-1 decision over No. 7 Carnegie Mellon
in the semifinals. In the title match, Emory upended
defending champ and then No. 2-ranked Washington University,
5-2.
Transylvania has won its last five matches and stands 12-5 heading
into the regionals. Transy will be making the program’s
fourth straight trip to the national tournament after gaining an
automatic nod by virtue of winning the Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference.
The Colonels of Wilkes University, 12-5, meet Transylvania with an
11-match win streak. Wilkes landed an automatic berth after
winning the Freedom Conference championships
In addition to its No. 25 national ranking, the Generals of
Washington & Lee hold down the No. 7 spot in the Atlantic South
Region. W&L received automatic entry to the NCAA
Tournament after winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title
with a 5-3 victory over Hampden-Sydney on April 25. The
Generals own a record of 15-8.
The Lions of TCNJ, 10-6, received one of nine Pool B bids to the
tournament.
This year’s tournament is comprised of 42 teams.
Automatic qualifications were granted to 28 conference champions,
which form "Pool A." Nine teams were selected from true
independents and schools from conferences that do not have an
automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining five
teams were chosen from those teams in conferences with automatic
bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool
B institutions (Pool C).
The regional champ will advance to the NCAA Championships with
quarterfinal round action beginning on May 25. Oberlin
College (OH) will serve as the host of the Championships
