Emory's Chris Goodwin Finishes Runner-Up In NCAA D-III Men's Tennis Championship Match

Emory University sophomore Chris Goodwin came up short in his quest to win the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships on Sunday, falling in straight sets to Washington University’s John Watts in the title match.

Watts earned the championship after recording a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Goodwin who ended his season with a record of 25-9.  After breezing to a win in the opening set, Watts held a 2-1 edge in the second set and extended his advantage to 3-1 after he rallied from a 0-40 deficit .  Goodwin fought back to claim the fifth game but Watts closed out the match from there en route to claiming his first national singles title.

Goodwin has aiming to be the second member of his family with win the D-III singles crown after his older brother Michael captured the top spot in 2009.
