Emory University sophomore Chris Goodwin picked up
two more wins in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship today
and has put himself in the title match of the competition.
Goodwin will battle John Watts from Washington University for the
championship on Sunday starting at noon. The Championships are
being held at the Don Hunsinger Courts on the campus of Oberlin
College.
Goodwin, seeded No. 5, opened Saturday’s action with a 7-6,
6-3 victory in the quarterfinals against Andy Peters of
Middlebury. Goodwin then posted a three-set decision over
Austin Chafetz of Amherst College, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the semifinals
that propelled him into the finals. The two victories today
boost Goodwin’s season record to 25-8.
“Chris has gotten better in each round and raised his level
of play,” said Emory head coach John Browning. He was
down 3-1 in the third set and faced a 15-40 score in the fifth
game. But, he did not panic and fought back to win the
match.”
Watts marched into the finals with a quarterfinal victory over
Brian Pybus of UC-Santa Cruz before registering a straight-set win
over Andrew Lee of Middlebury in the semifinal round. Watts
was recently named the ITA Senior Player of the Year.
Emory sophomore Dillon Pottish won his first two singles matches on
Friday but saw his run end with a loss to Lee in the
quarterfinals.
This year’s final marks the second straight season that a
member of the Goodwin family has competed in the match.
Former Emory standout Michael Goodwin claimed the 2009 singles
title as a senior, defeating Ben Stein from Bates College in three
