Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Rochester in UAA Opener

The Emory University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 3 in
Division III, got off to a solid start at the University Athletic
Association Championships on Friday, defeating the University of
Rochester. The Eagles notched their fifth straight victory
and upped their overall record to 12-7 following a 9-0 decision
over the Yellowjackets who slipped to 10-10. Serving as the
host for the conference championships is Carnegie Mellon.
Emory did not drop a set against Rochester with the victory
allowing it to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The
Eagles bolted to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and were never
headed after that. The senior tandem of Oliver Lopp and David
Caplan picked up the team’s first point following an 8-1 win
over Dan Barbash and Brian Schmeer at No. 2. Senior Chris
Redmond and sophomore Dillon Pottish continued their fine play at
No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 blanking of the Yellowjackets, while
senior Chris Jordan and sophomore Chris Goodwin prevailed at the
No. 1 spot, 8-4, over Brian Bowman and Austin Armstrong.
Goodwin increased the team’s lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0
verdict against Schmeer at No. 2 singles while senior Oliver Lopp
clinched the outcome with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 5 spot.
Freshman Noah Simonson captured his fifth straight decision at the
No. 3 position, bettering Armstrong by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Sophomore Dillon Pottish nailed down his 22nd singles
victory of the year, a 6-0, 6-3 outcome over Bowman at No. 1 while
junior Colin Eagle also emerged victorious at No. 4.
Emory will play either Carnegie Mellon or Case Western on Saturday
beginning at 12:30 p.m. The other semifinal contest will see
No. 1 seed and defending UAA champ Washington University take on
Brandeis. The championship match is slated for Sunday at 9:00
a.m.
