Emory Men's Tennis Dominates All-UAA Teams -- Dillon Pottish Named MVP
Three singles players and two doubles teams from the Emory
men’s tennis program
were selected to the All-University Athletic Association First Team
as chosen by the league’s coaches. The No. 2-ranked
Eagles of Head Coach John Browning captured first-place at the UAA
Championships, Apr. 15-17, in Beverly, Mass.
Junior Dillon Pottish highlighted the team’s honorees as he
was named the UAA’s Most Valuable Player for the second
straight year after helping Emory to it 21st
championship in the past 22 campaigns. Pottish landed
first-team acclaim at No. 1 singles after posting a 3-0 record, and
joined forces with senior Colin Egan to earn first-team accolades
at No. 3 doubles. Pottish opened singles action with a 6-2,
6-0 win over Rochester’s Boris Borovcanin in his initial test
before topping Carnegie Mellon’s Alex Nemerova, 6-0, 6-2, in
helping the Eagles to a 7-1 win in the semifinals. Pottish
then came away with an impressive 6-2, 6-2, verdict over Washington
University’s Isaac Stein in the finals where Emory prevailed
by a 6-0 margin. In doubles, Pottish and Egan breezed through
matches against Rochester and CMU before closing out the weekend
with a resounding 8-0 decision over Wash U’s Gary Parizher
and Adam Putterman. Pottish now owns a 30-2 singles record
during the 2010-11 campaign, the second-most wins in school
history.
Junior Chris Goodwin, earned his third straight first-team berth at
No. 2 singles after manufacturing a 3-0 slate including a 6-3, 6-3
triumph over Max Woods in the championship match. Goodwin
also defeated Rochester’s Joel Allen, 6-0, 6-0, and
CMU’s Duke Miller, 7-6, 2-6, 10-2. Goodwin, along with
junior Will Humphreys, shared first-team kudos at No. 1 doubles
after finishing the Championships with a 3-0 record.
Rounding out Emory’s first-team honorees was freshman Simon
Lavoie-LaPerusse at No. 5 singles. Lavoie-Perusse finished
with a 3-0 record including a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Kareem Farah
of Washington University. In addition, Lavoie-Perusse was
tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Year joining past Eagles
Mark Odgers (2002), Mike Goodwin (2006) and Chris Goodwin (2009) to
have earned that award.
Emory had a pair of singles players land second-team recognition,
Egan at No. 3, where he posted a 2-0 slate with one match
unfinished, and freshman Nick Szczurek at No. 4, who also compiled
a 2-0 effort with one match unfinished.
Finally, head coach John Browning, along with assistants Mark
Odgers and Chris Redmond, were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the
Year.
