Emory Men's Tennis Dominates All-UAA Teams -- Dillon Pottish Named MVP

Three singles players and two doubles teams from the Emory men’s tennis program
were selected to the All-University Athletic Association First Team as chosen by the league’s coaches.  The No. 2-ranked Eagles of Head Coach John Browning captured first-place at the UAA Championships, Apr. 15-17, in Beverly, Mass.

Junior Dillon Pottish highlighted the team’s honorees as he was named the UAA’s Most Valuable Player for the second straight year after helping Emory to it 21st championship in the past 22 campaigns.   Pottish landed first-team acclaim at No. 1 singles after posting a 3-0 record, and joined forces with senior Colin Egan to earn first-team accolades at No. 3 doubles.  Pottish opened singles action with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rochester’s Boris Borovcanin in his initial test before topping Carnegie Mellon’s Alex Nemerova, 6-0, 6-2, in helping the Eagles to a 7-1 win in the semifinals.  Pottish then came away with an impressive 6-2, 6-2, verdict over Washington University’s Isaac Stein in the finals where Emory prevailed by a 6-0 margin.  In doubles, Pottish and Egan breezed through matches against Rochester and CMU before closing out the weekend with a resounding 8-0 decision over Wash U’s Gary Parizher and Adam Putterman.  Pottish now owns a 30-2 singles record during the 2010-11 campaign, the second-most wins in school history.

Junior Chris Goodwin, earned his third straight first-team berth at No. 2 singles after manufacturing a 3-0 slate including a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Max Woods in the championship match.  Goodwin also defeated Rochester’s Joel Allen, 6-0, 6-0, and CMU’s Duke Miller, 7-6, 2-6, 10-2.  Goodwin, along with junior Will Humphreys, shared first-team kudos at No. 1 doubles after finishing the Championships with a 3-0 record.

Rounding out Emory’s first-team honorees was freshman Simon Lavoie-LaPerusse at No. 5 singles.  Lavoie-Perusse finished with a 3-0 record including a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Kareem Farah of Washington University.  In addition, Lavoie-Perusse was tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Year joining past Eagles Mark Odgers (2002), Mike Goodwin (2006) and Chris Goodwin (2009) to have earned that award.

Emory had a pair of singles players land second-team recognition, Egan at No. 3, where he posted a 2-0 slate with one match unfinished, and freshman Nick Szczurek at No. 4, who also compiled a 2-0 effort with one match unfinished.

Finally, head coach John Browning, along with assistants Mark Odgers and Chris Redmond, were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
