No. 4 Emory Men's Tennis Blanks Christopher Newport
The No. 4-ranked Emory University men's tennis team captured its
sixth straight match of the spring season this afternoon as it
recorded a 9-0 triumph over No. 30 Christopher Newport
University. With the win, the Eagles upped their mark to 8-1
while the Captains slipped to 2-2.
The Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the
match with the nation’s No. 2-ranked duo of Chris Goodwin and
Will Humphreys recording an 8-3 triumph over CNU’s Eric
Shulman and Gian Heyer. Senior Colin Egan and junior Dillon
Pottish won for the fifth time in six tries at No. 3 doubles with
an 8-2 triumph against Dusty Nelson and Lorenzo Sison. Senior
Alex Chun and Eric Rothschild came away with the final doubles
point with a 9-7 triumph at No. 2.
Emory won all six singles matches in straight sets with Pottish and
Goodwin registering identical 6-1, 6-0, victories at No. 1 and No.
2, respectively. Pottish moved his overall singles slate to
18-1 on the year (9-0 in dual action) while Goodwin notched his
11th overall win in 12 outings, 8-1 in dual action.
Senior Colin Egan came away with a6-2, 6-0 verdict over Garrett
Widing at No. 3 while freshman Nick Szczurek remained undefeated in
the spring with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matt King. Humphreys (No.
5) and freshman Simon Lavoie-Perusse (No. 6) were the other Emory
victors.
The Eagles will head to California next week for a slew of
spring-break matches starting on Wednesday (Mar. 9) when they play
at Azusa-Pacific, the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA ranks.
