No. 4 Emory Men's Tennis To Host Christopher Newport -- Then Heads West For Spring Break Competition
The No. 4-ranked Emory University men's tennis team returns to
action for the first time since capturing the ITA National Indoor
Championships when it hosts Christopher Newport on Saturday (Mar.
5). Action at the Woodruff PE Center gets underway at 11:30
a.m.
Head coach John Browning and his Eagles stand 7-1 in the spring
after capturing three matches en route to the title at the National
Indoors. Emory opened with an 8-1 triumph over Mary
Washington before topping Carnegie Mellon by the same score in the
semifinals. In the title match, the Eagles topped No. 6 Washington
University, 6-3.
Junior Dillon Pottish, the No. 1-ranked D-III singles player, has
compiled an 8-0 slate at No. 1 singles thus far while classmate
junior Chris Goodwin, ranked No. 9 on the national scene, has
manufactured a 7-1slate at No. 2 singles. Senior Colin Egan
has been solid at No. 3 singles with a 5-1 effort while rookies
Nick Szczurek (6-0) and Simon LaPerusse (4-2) have bolstered No. 5
& 6 singles spots, respectively.
At doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Goodwin and junior Will Humphreys
stand 7-1 in dual action, 14-2 during the entire year. The
Eagles have received consistent and productive play at the No. 3
slot with Pottish and Egan joining forces to fashion a 5-1
record.
Christopher Newport, deadlocked for 30th place in the
national rankings, stands 1-1 after dropping its opening match of
the spring to Division I foe Old Dominion before registering a 9-0
decision over Virginia Wesleyan. The Captains are led by
junior Eric Shulman who is ranked as the No. 4 singles player in
Division III.
Following the CNU match, the Eagles pack their bags and head West
for spring-break action. On Wednesday (Mar. 9), Emory plays
at Azusa Pacific, the No. 4 ranked team in the NAIA, before taking
on No. 16 Redlands the following day. Emory will then compete
at the prestigious Stag-Hen Invitational, Mar. 11-12, hosted by No.
3-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
