Emory's Pottish & Goodwin Advance To Finals of NCAA D-III Men's Singles Championship
Emory University juniors Dillon Pottish and
Chris Goodwin will square off in the singles final
of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Singles Championships
on Sunday after each player won their respective quarterfinal and
semifinal-round matches today. The Championships are being
held in Claremont, Calif., with Claremont-Mudd Scripps and
Pomona-Pitzer College serving as the host institutions.
Pottish, the No. 1 seeded player in the 32-player field, was
impressive throughout the day, opening with a 6-2, 6-4, victory
over Andrew Peters of Amherst in the quarters before dispatching
Brian Pybas of UC-Santa Cruz in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1.
Pottish was nearly unstoppable in the contest vs. the No. 3-seeded
Pybas, breaking his foe’s serve on three occasions in the
first set and twice in the second set. The victories were the
36th and 37th of the year for Pottish and
he’ll enter Sunday’s final just one shy of tying the
school record for most wins in a season.
Goodwin, the No. 4 seed, played two singles matches on Friday, as
well as a doubles contest that ended late that evening, had a
considerably more interesting day, defeating Tommy Meyer of
Pomona-Pitzer in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals
before capturing another three-set battle against big-hitting Max
Frey of Trinity University (TX), 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, in the semis.
After a workman-like first set, Goodwin held a 3-2 advantage in the
second set with triple-break point. However, Frey fought off
Goodwin to win that game, along with the next two, to assume a 5-3
lead. After Goodwin held serve, Frey won the next game to
force the third set. In the final set, Goodwin won two of the
first three games and then broke Frey to claim a 3-1 edge.
After holding serve, Goodwin broke Frey again to take a commanding
5-1 bulge. Goodwin then closed out the match the following
game, to notch his 30th win in 34 outings this year.
The singles title is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (EDT) on Sunday.
