Emory Men's Tennis Captures ITA National Indoor Championships

The No. 4-ranked Emory men's tennis team won the ITA National Indoor Championships for the second time in the past three years on Sunday with a victory over No. 6-ranked Washington University.  The Eagles raised their dual record this spring to 7-1 following a 6-3 triumph over the Bears who fell to 4-2.

Emory had to battle back from a 2-0 deficit as the Bears captured the first two doubles points.  The Eagles’ No. 1 duo of juniors Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys earned the team’s initial point of the match with an 8-5 decision Isaac Stein and Max Woods, raising their record this spring to 7-1.

Emory regained control of the match with its victories in five of the six matches propelling it to its fourth Indoor title in 11 years.  Junior Dillon Pottish remained undefeated in the spring, raising his record to 8-0, following a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Stein at the No. 1 spot.  At No. 2, junior Chris Goodwin boosted his spring slate to 7-1 with a fine 6-1, 7-5, effort over Woods.   Senior Colin Egan turned in a three-set win at No. 3, topping Adam Putterman, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, while freshman Nick Szczurek came through with a 6-3, 6-3 verdict over Gary Parizher at No.4.  Simon LaPerusse was the other singles winner for Emory, notching a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision over Bryan Haywood at the No. 5 position.

Emory returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 5, when it hosts Christopher Newport at 11:30 a.m.
