Emory Men's Tennis To Host ITA South Atlantic Regional Championship
The Emory University men's tennis team will open its 2010 fall
season this weekend, as the team hosts the Fall Wilson/ ITA South
Atlantic Regional Championship Tournament from Friday, September
24th, through Sunday, September 26th. The event
will feature top players from Division III schools in the region.
The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament
advance to the Oct. 14-17 Intercollegiate Tennis Association
National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama.
There will be three sites utilized for this weekend's action.
On Friday, matches will be held at the Woodruff PE Center
Outdoor Courts on the Emory campus, Agnes Scott College and Student
Activity and Academic Center (SAAC) on Emory's Clairmont
campus. On Saturday, action will take place
at the Woodruff PE Center and the SAAC. On
Sunday, all matches will take place at the Woodruff PE Center.
Emory junior Dillon
Pottish (East Quogue, NY), a 2010 All-American, enters
the tournament as the defending singles champion as well as the No.
1 seed while the Eagles' tandem of Chris
Goodwin and Will
Humphreys enter the doubles portion of the event as
the top seed. Goodwin, along with Pottish, captured the doubles
crown in 2009.
Schools that will have players competing include: Emory, Centre,
Sewanee, North Carolina Wesleyan, Birmingham-Southern, Methodist,
Oglethorpe, Covenant, Rhodes, Millsaps, Berry and Mississippi
College.
The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and
annually crowns men's and women's singles and doubles national
champions in each of the ITA's four small college divisions (NCAA
Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College). These
championships are the only national tournaments for singles and
doubles at the NCAA Division II and NAIA level, and the only
tournaments that combine the levels of Junior/Community Colleges
(NJCAA Divisions I-III and the California schools). Participants
are determined through these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships,
which serve as qualifying tournaments. The national champions from
each division square off in the "Super Bowl" of Small College
Tennis to determine the overall ITA National Small College
Champions (who then earn berths into the ITA National
Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, a Division I event, in
November).
