Men's Tennis Defeats Mary Washington At ITA National Indoors
The No. 4-ranked Emory men’s tennis team opened the ITA
National Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon with an 8-1 win
over No. 22 Mary Washington. The victory boosted the Eagles
spring record to 5-1. This year’s ITA National Indoor
Championships are being held in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles held a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of
the match. Emory’s No. 1 tandem of Chris Goodwin and
Will Humphreys recorded an 8-3 triumph over UMW’s Kaz Murta
and Sam Wichlin while the duo of Eric Rothschild and Alex Chun came
away with a similar score against Riley Baver and Kevin Aquino at
No. 2. Junior Dillon Pottish and senior Colin Egan were
victorious at No. 3, topping Will Apperson and Alex Blakhin,
8-4.
Emory notched straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches
with Pottish besting Wichlin, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1. Goodwin
hammered out a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Murata at the No. 2 slot
while Egan finished with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 verdict over
Blakhin. Freshmen Nick Szczurek and Simon LaPerusse earned
the other singles win at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Emory advances to Saturday’s semifinal round where it will
meet either Cal Lutheran or Carnegie Mellon at 2:00 p.m.
