Emory Men's Tennis Battles Georgetown -- Then Competes At ITA National Indoor Championships
The No. 4-ranked Emory University men's tennis team faces a busy
week of action when it takes on NCAA Division I member Georgetown
on Thursday (Feb. 17) before competing at the ITA National Indoor
Championships this Friday through Sunday (Feb. 18-20). This
year’s Championships will be held on the campus of the
University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, with the
matches being held at the University Tennis Center.
Eight of the top NCAA Division III men's tennis programs in the
nation will be vying for the crown including seven of the top 10
ranked teams in the nation.
Emory enters the event as the top seed and will meet host and No.
22-ranked Mary Washington in its opening match on Friday at 3:00
p.m. The winners advance to the semifinals on Saturday to
meet either Carnegie Mellon or Cal Lutheran. The final is
slated for Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Other first-round matchups include No. 6 and third-seeded
Washington University vs. No. 9-ranked and sixth-seeded North
Carolina Wesleyan College, and fifth-ranked and second-seeded UC
Santa Cruz against 10th ranked and seventh seeded Trinity
University.
The Eagles of head coach John Browning took home third place in
last year’s competition, defeating DePauw in their opening
match before coming up short against Washington University in the
semifinals. Emory went on to defeat Kenyon College in the
third-place match.
Emory stands 3-1 through four matches having split a pair of home
contests this past Saturday, coming out on the short end of a 5-4
decision to NAIA power Auburn-Montgomery before topping crosstown
foe Oglethorpe University, 8-1.
The Hoyas of Georgetown are 0-3 following setbacks to Lehigh,
Stetson and Temple. The Emory vs. Georgetown match will be held at
