No. 4-Ranked Emory Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season
The 2010-11 Emory University men's tennis team begins its spring
schedule on Thursday, Feb. 3, with a pair of home matches. At
2:30 p.m. the Eagles take on Shorter College before meeting Georgia
Perimeter at 4:00 p.m. Both affairs will be held at the
Woodruff PE Center Indoor Courts.
Led by 12th-year Head Coach John Browning, the Eagles head into the
spring campaign ranked as the No. 4 Division III team in the
country behind No. 1 Middlebury, No. 2 Amherst and No. 3
Claremont-Mudd Scripps.
Browning will have a strong corps of veterans to call upon as well
as a talented crop of newcomers. At the conclusion of the
fall portion of the schedule, Emory had two players ranked among
the top 20 nationally in singles - juniors Dillon
Pottish (#1), and Chris Goodwin (#9).
Senior Colin Egan also earned a No. 29
national ranking at singles. In doubles, the duo of Goodwin and
junior Will Humphreys held down the No. 2 spot nationally.
In the South Atlantic Region rankings, Pottish (#1), Goodwin (#3)
and Egan (#7) were slotted among the top 10 singles players while
Humphreys (#12), also garnered top 15
recognition.
Pottish enjoyed a productive fall that saw him earned All-America
honors after capturing the singles crown at the ITA South-Atlantic
Regional Championships, defeating Egan in the deciding match.
He then became the first player in school history to win the
Division III singles title at the ITA Small College Championships,
in Mobile, Alabama, topping Felix Sun of Williams College,
7-5, 6-1, in the battle for the crown.
Goodwin and Humphreys were ITA Regional doubles champions and
advanced to the title match at the Small College Championships.
