No. 2 Emory Men's Tennis Team Eyes UAA Championships
2011 UAA Men's Tennis Championships Information
The No. 2-ranked Emory University men's tennis team takes to
the road this weekend (Apr. 15-17) when it competes at the
University Athletic Association Championships. Serving as
host for this year's event is Brandeis University. The
Championships will be contested on the outdoor courts on the
Brandeis campus. The Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly,
Mass., will be used in case of inclement weather.
The Eagles of head coach John Browning enter the weekend as the No.
1 seed and will battle the University of Rochester, the No. 8 seed,
on Friday starting at 9:00 a.m. The winner of that match
advances to the semifinals to play either Carnegie Mellon (# 4
seed) or Brandeis (#5 seed) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The
title and third-place matches are slated for Sunday at 9:00
a.m. Other quarterfinal matches on Friday include No. 2 seed
Chicago University vs. No. 7 New York University and No. 3 seed
Washington University vs. No. 6 Case Western.
Emory heads into the competition as the defending champion, having
topped Washington U. by a 5-2 count in the 2010 title bout.
Dillon Pottish, Chris Goodwin and Colin Egan helped Emory to last
year’s title with the trio all recording 3-0 records in
singles. The Eagles have captured 20 of the last 21 UAA crowns and
have played the Bears in the finals for five straight years.
This year’s Championships should prove interesting as five
squads are ranked among the nation’s top 30 D-III
programs. In addition to Emory’s spot in the national
polls, other conference members that are ranked include Wash U.
(#5), Chicago (#15), Carnegie Mellon (#17) and Brandeis
(t-30th).
The Eagles stand 17-3 this spring and have won all 13 of their
matches against Division III competition.
