Emory Men's Tennis Defeats Cal Lutheran
The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team remained undefeated Wednesday afternoon as it topped No. 20 Cal Lutheran. The Eagles ran their record to 8-0 following an 8-1 decision over the Kingsmen who slipped to 6-2.
Emory turned in a strong performance in doubles play, winning all three matches in impressive fashion. The tandem of junior Elliot Kahler and freshman Ian Wagner raised their record to 7-0 at the No. 2 spot (8-0 overall) with an 8-1 verdict over Justin Wilson and Connor Treacy. Senior Will Humphreys and freshman Brian Kowalski continued their fine play at No. 3 with an 8-1 win over Thomas Millet and Marcelo Sousa. Seniors Dillon Pottish and Chris Goodwin also came away with an 8-2 triumph at No. 1.
Emory captured five of the six singles matches with four of those affairs going to a third set. Pottish, the No. 1-ranked singles player in D-III, bested No. 14-ranked Nick Ballou, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to raise his record to 8-0 this spring. Wagner battled his way to a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3, his fifth win in six decisions at that spot (7-1 overall). Freshman Eric Halpren rallied for a key outcome against Treacy, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 while freshman Alex Ruderman and Goodwin came away with the other singles victories at Nos. 5 & 6, respectively.
The Eagles return to action this Friday and Saturday (Mar. 16-17) when they compete at the Stag-Hen Invitational. Serving as the host institutions will be Claremont-Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer. Emory will play No. 30 Skidmore College at on Friday at 10:00 am (PDT) before taking on either Kenyon College or Pomona-Pitzer later that day. Final-round matches will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday.
