Emory Men's Tennis Off To Fast Start At ITA Regionals

The Emory University men’s tennis squad enjoyed a productive
first day at the ITA Regional Championships on Friday with nine of
its 10 representatives in the Main Singles draw winning two matches
while four of the five doubles teams captured their opening-round
matches. Serving as the host of the Regionals is the
University of the South.
Senior Chris Goodwin, the No. 1 singles
seed, highlighted the team’s effort topping Adam
Henderson of Emory & Henry, 6-0, 6-1, before registering a
decisive 6-1, 6-0 decision over Moses Das of Piedmont
College. Goodwin will meet up with Victor Selander of North
Carolina Wesleyan in a third-round match on Saturday with the
winner advancing to the quarterfinals later on in the day.
Senior Dillion Pottish, the No. 2 seed, posted a
6-3, 6-3 triumph against Brian Brandt of Birmingham Southern in the
first round before notching a 6-2, 6-2 verdict against David
Bastain of Millsaps. Pottish’s next foe will be
sophomore teammate Nick Szcurek who defeated Joel
Silverberg of Piedmont (6-1, 6-2) and Brad Pennington of Rhodes
(7-6, 6-3).
Other Emory players to earn two wins in the Main Singles Draw
included Brian Kowalski, Alex
Ruderman, Ian Wagner, Simon
Lavoie-Perusse, Eric Halpren and
Elliott Kahler.
In doubles, Goodwin, along with senior Will Humphreys, manufactured
an 8-5 triumph over the Methodist team of Hans Baumstark and Mikesh
Desai, and will take on the Birmingham duo of John Zukely and
Michael Wilson on Saturday. Pottish and Kahler, the No.
2 doubles seed, recorded n 8-3 decision over Piedmont’s
Das and Steck and will battle Guilford’s Tyler Mercier and
Hamilton.
