The No. 6-ranked Emory University men's tennis team returns to action next week (Mar. 3 & 4) when it plays host to a pair of region opponents. On Monday (Mar. 3), the Eagles entertain Methodist University starting at 2:00 pm before welcoming Christopher Newport to the Woodruff PE Center the following afternoon in a scheduled 1:00 pm start.
Emory stands 4-2 after winning two of three matches at the National Indoor Championships last weekend in Mayfield Village, Ohio. The Eagles lost their opening match to Johns Hopkins, 6-3, before battling to a tight 5-4 victory over No. 5 Kenyon College. In the fifth-place match, Emory bested No. 14 Redlands, 7-2.
Junior Ian Wagner (Columbus, OH) highlighted the team's effort, winning all three of his singles matches at the No. 5 spot, defeating Erik Lim of JHU (6-3, 6-2), Colin Haas of Kenyon (6-3, 6-2) and Teddy Burchett of Redlands (2-6, 6-1, 3-0). Wagner's performance enabled him to run his singles record to 5-1 this year.
Methodist, currently ranked No. 11 in the Atlantic South Region, stands 5-3 following victories over Hampden-Sydney and Guilford this past Saturday. The Monarchs will battle Birmingham Southern and Rhodes on March 1 and Oglethorpe on March 2 before clashing with Emory.
Christopher Newport, ranked No. 10 in the region, posts a 2-1 slate following a 7-0 defeat to Norfolk State on Saturday. The Captains will meet Rhodes, Oglethorpe and Birmingham Southern prior to the Emory match.
