Emory's Jemison Advances To Quarterfinals; Cassone Falls In Round Of 16 At NCAA D-III Singles Championships

Emory junior Jonathan Jemison and freshman Hayden Cassone took part in the NCAA D-III Men's Singles Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.

The unseeded Jemison opened with a 6-1, 6-4, triumph over the No. 2 seed and defending singles champion Lubomir Cuba from Middlebury.  That win propelled Jemison to the Round of 16 where he scrapped his way to a come-from-behind victory against Vishnu Joshi from Johns Hopkins, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.  Jemison advances to Friday's quarterfinals where he will play either Sean Wei of Amherst or Leo Vithoontien of Carleton.

Cassone, who also entered the competition unseeded, battled to a 7-5, 6-2, verdict against Andrew Finkelman from Wesleyan (CT) in his first match.  Cassone then dropped a 4-6, 1-6, outcome to No. 6 seed Brian Grodecki from Williams.  Cassone ended the season with an overall singles ledger of 26-7, with his victory total tying for 14th place on the school's seasonal chart.

The doubles team of senior Scott Rubinstein and junior James Spaulding were slated to open Thursday evening with the pair matching up against Robert Carter and Zachary Hewlin of Whitman.
